Introduction
ERD Commander 2000 is the ideal utility for systems administrators who miss the ease of booting DOS disks to recover damaged Windows installations. It is a powerful repair and recovery tool that fixes problems that prevent Windows NT/2000 from booting, and salvages systems without losing critical data. Until now, boot functionality was not a feature available for Windows NT/2000 – even with, in many cases, the Windows 2000 Recovery Console.

ERD Commander 2000 is a command-line based utility that boots from either a set of 3.5” floppy disks, a CD-ROM, or directly from the hard disk of a Windows NT/2000 system. It allows users to perform recovery-related operations by accessing and modifying files on NTFS and FAT disk volumes. ERD Commander 2000’s environment mirrors the standard NT/2000 console-mode environment, so users familiar with the commands of these operating systems can intuitively utilize this utility. When a downed server is booted using ERD Commander 2000, access is provided to every drive and device available from NT/2000, including removable drives. Administrators can then remove or replace corrupted drivers, update system files, correct security mistakes that prevent the OS from booting, recover from improperly installed Service Packs or other updates, and copy essential files off of a dead system.

ERD Commander 2000 works on NT 4.0 and Windwos 2000.

This read-only version introduces you to the capabilities of ERD Commander 2000. Most commands that cause modifications, such as delete, rename, move, etc., are documented here, but are disabled. Mkdir and Rmdir are the two modification commands enabled in this version. Information on ordering the read/write version of ERD Commander 2000 is available at Winternals Software.

Uses
ERD Commander can be used to help you solve problems such as:

Removing or Replacing Buggy Drivers
You can use ERD Commander to delete the image files of drivers or services that, because of a bug or misconfiguration, prevent NT from booting.

Updating Out-of-Date System Files
Incorrectly applying service packs or system software updates can cause system DLLs to become out of sync with each other. In many cases this can prevent NT from booting successfully. ERD Commander 2000can copy up-to-date versions of old files from floppy disks or CD-ROMs onto a system or you can edit files with its built-in file editor.

Correcting Misconfigured NTFS Security
If security attributes that are too restrictive are applied to certain system files or directories on NTFS boot drives, NT will become unbootable. ERD Commander 20000includes a special command, Access, which unlocks otherwise inaccessible files or directories so that NT can access them.

Updating Locked Files
Once Windows NT/2000 is up-and-running many system files cannot be replaced because the system keeps them locked. ERD Commander 2000makes it possible to update such files because it runs when Windows NT/2000 is off-line and the files are not open.

Correcting Registry Problems
A number of NT boot problems are the result of misconfigured Registry values. With ERD Commander 2000you can edit the Registry using its built-in Registry editor.

Copying Important Files off of a Dead System
ERD Commander enables you to access files on an Windows NT/2000 system that fails to boot. Important files can be salvaged onto a floppy disk or other removable media.

Note that ERD Commander 2000is not intended to resolve disk corruption errors, and that only drives that are consistent enough to be recognized by Windows NT/2000 file systems will be accessible with ERD Commander.
What it Looks Like
Below is a presentation of what a typical display looks like after ERD Commander has started. ERD Commander shows information on the disk drives that are recognized and the drive letters it has assigned for them. Volume name, file system type, and drive size data should help you identify particular drives.

Installation
When you execute the ERD Commander 2000 Setup program it will allow you to create a set of Windows NT/2000 boot floppies configured with ERD Commander 2000, create a bootable CD image of ERD Commander 2000, or install ERD Commander 2000 to your hard drive as an alternate Boot.Ini startup option.

When you enter an ERD Commander 2000 installation, a stripped-down version of Windows NT/2000 will start, and ERD Commander then starts automatically and enters a command-line environment nearly identical to the one Windows NT/2000 implements in Command-Prompt.
Uses
The command set of ERD Commander 2000, like its command-line editing features, is similar to that of NT. The command set includes all standard file-related commands, and virtually all support the same options as their NT counter-parts. This list can be obtained inside of ERD Commander 2000by entering the HELP command, and detailed information on the syntax of a particular command can listed by typing "command /?" or "HELP command". Note that the commands are interpreted in a case-insensitive manner so that "HELP" is the same as "help".
